Public health officials and researchers are often
faced with the complex reality of making health-related decisions
in the absence of coordinated research agendas and/or functional
data management systems yet they need to identify priority health
problems, formulate health policies and respond to public health
emergencies effectively.
At present in Kenya, the ability to access past,
present and future Reproductive Health (RH) research and data
is insufficient. Given the wealth of research activities in Kenya,
and even more in the pipeline, it is essential that a coordinated
mechanism be developed to guide agencies and individuals in addressing
the country’s priority RH issues. At any level, strategic
planning and relevant decision-making is best supported by the
use of evidence-based framework. By being fully aware of existing
research and knowledge, program managers, technical advisors and
researchers can be guided to address the most important needs
of the communities they serve.
For these and other reasons, policy makers in Kenya
seek to establish a national comprehensive research management
activity within the Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) if the
Ministry of Health taking the lead. Primary steps taken by the
DRH to advance research management include the establishment of
a research working group and a resource centre.
